Middle Keeney, Lower New River Gorge

SHARE

INFORMATION

RAPID NAME: Middle Keeney

RAPID RATING: Class IV

RIVER SECTION: Lower New River Gorge - Cunard To Fayette Station

Arguably the most consequential of the Keeneys, Class IV, Middle Keeney is created by boulders that have slid down Keeney’s Creek river right. At high water, a building breaking wave forms in the center or the river known as the mouth wave. Paddlers should run either left or right of this wave as successfully running this wave depends largely on where the wave is breaking in its cycle. At lower water, paddlers should run left of center and squeeze between a ledge hole to the left and a rock near the center known as “moss rock”. Most paddlers choose to finish Middle Keeney in the large eddy river left to prepare themselves for the roller coaster waves in Lower Keeney.
