Kayak Touring In The New River Gorge Region

SHARE

There are waterways to see in our area that don’t involve any whitewater! Experience the beauty of Southern West Virginia and The New River Gorge Region in a recreational kayak. Sit closer to the water and enjoy feeling connected to the outdoors as you paddle scenic stretches of water.

Already have your own gear and you’re ready to hit the water? You’ll want to check out Summersville Lake. West Virginia’s largest lake is home to some of the clearest blue water imaginable, so clear that it’s known as “The Little Bahamas of the East”. Summersville Lake is lined with incredible sandstone cliffs, and is unique in that it has remained undeveloped–there are no mega houses surrounding its cliffs or shoreline. In your rec kayak, you can explore the coves and waterfalls of Summersville Lake, make sure you take breaks to swim in the crystal clear water too!

Or, check out Plum Orchard Lake. Located south of The New River Gorge, this 202-acre lake is an ideal place to explore in a rec kayak. Water lilies thrive in this warm water lake, and an abundance of fish are known to live in the water. Similar to Summersville Lake, Plum Orchard Lake boasts incredible water clarity.

Don’t have your own gear or traveling from out of town without it? Stop in at ACE Adventure Gear and purchase a rec kayak, or demo one for a day (or two!) before you buy. Grab any necessary paddling items from AAG like sun protection, PFDs, paddles, and so much more.
